I watched Sinners last week to see what the hype was about and it was good, I enjoyed it. But nothing about it screamed "This should be the Most Oscar Nominated Picture Of All Time". Too many missteps and random cheesy moments to be considered a masterpiece (*spoilers* breakdancers and fake Bootsy Collins in the 1930s juke joint, anyone? MBJ as Schwarzenegger in "Commando" action scene at the end? etc)
I'm sure I'm in the minority but the Best Best Picture winner of all time in my opinion is The Apartment (1960). Can't beat Jack Lemmon
The Secret Agent is the best film of the year in my book. OBAA is insufferable Leftist revolutionary cosplay with some genuinely interesting aspects (Penn’s bonkers performance, Benicio’s cool-as-a-cucumber characterization, the cinematography) and Sinners is basically a vampire-meets-the-Blues mashup that never really rises above its horror movie tropes (but who doesn’t love Buddy Guy, eh?).
Another fascinating piece from Jacob Savage. Interesting thesis: Basically the Academy is entirely Europoor now, so it stopped having any sense of taste beyond being vaguely arthouse and snooty.
It is interesting to see your conclusions said with such conviction, and I definitely agree with the mispricings in some of the picks you mentioned. This Oscars though, what I’ve found to be more interesting are Best Supporting Actor and Actress respectively — they appear to be a genuine toss up, although I seem to have disagreed with initial crowd consensus earlier in the year, but they have converged with my views over time and information released over the awards season. How Sean Penn (over the other nominated candidates) would not be a clear winner this year baffles me, but your data point on the Academy being more internationalized would make sense on how the others might be in the running. All love to the nominees, though, I enjoyed all their performances
Truly odd premise. Creating a fictional straw man and guessing their opinions like chuck schumer and the baileys? Has there been an influx of European DP’s into the academy we don’t know about? What does this offer
Pointing out that the Islam takeover of Europe is bad does not make one “something of a Nazi.” Can we please look at the substance of the claims before throwing heavy accusations? That’s precisely how the left got radicalised and how, in turn, MAGA rose to power.

in fact there has been lol https://press.oscars.org/news/academy-invites-534-membership
What on that list supports that idea? And there are over 11k voters even if your point was right (it’s not)
There’s like 30 DP’s total on that list
how many of them are american lol
